Keep your fade fresh. Learn how long a mid taper fade lasts, when to rebook, and tips for extending the life of your haircut.
A mid taper fade is a living thing—it changes every day as your hair grows. Here is exactly what to expect after you leave the barbershop.
Day 1-3: Crisp, sharp, perfect blend. Day 7-10: The "skin" area (if any) has stubble. The fade softens but still looks intentional. Day 14-21: The crisp lines around the ears blur. The "taper" effect is less obvious. It starts to look like a regular haircut. Day 28+: It's officially "grown out." The sides might feel puffy.
Most people book their next appointment at the 3-week mark.

Ask for the back to be tapered out to skin at the very bottom. This keeps the neckline looking clean for an extra week compared to a squared-off neckline.
As the sides grow out, volume on the sides increases. Counteract this by adding more volume to the top using styling powder or clay. This keeps the "fade silhouette" (wide top, narrow bottom) illusion going longer.
You can use a personal trimmer to clean up just the neck hair and behind the ears. Do NOT try to touch the fade blend yourself unless you want to end up wearing a hat for a month.

Compared to a high skin fade which looks messy in 10 days, the mid taper is forgiving. The lower starting point means growth is less obvious.
